2013 Perth Nationals

The 2013 Yamaha National Band championships ended on Sunday March 31 with a very respectable 4th place finish for the Feds.  The 4th place came in one of the most hotly contested nationals in recent history, and was the highest placed finish for the band since 2003.

Band President Shane Midgley said   ‘I was extremely proud.  The standard of music and bandsmanship the band displayed over the weekend was world class.  It was a tough competition and we are very happy to come away with such strong result.’

A highlight of the competition was Sundays Own Choice performance of Nigel Clarke’s ‘Earthrise’.  The band thoroughly enjoyed performing the piece, and it showed on the concert stage.  The band received 3rd place in the tightly contested Own Choice section where only one point separated 1st, 2nd and 3rd!

The band received a great deal of praise for their spirited performances over the entire weekend and a great deal of thanks must go to Conductor Mareika Gray for her leadership and musicality through the challenging pieces.

The band also wishes to thank Russell Gray for his fine performance on Principal Cornet.   Russell’s amazing abilities were a joy to hear during the extremely demanding ‘Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’ Test Piece performance.

The band would like to wish special congratulations to our other outstanding players, soloists and entrants in the individual soloist competitions.  Nathaniel Griffiths and Fendall Hill each received 3rd place on euphonium and soprano cornet, and further congratulations also go to Resident Conductor Louisa Lawless, and Band President Shane Midgley for their 1st and 4th placings in the flugel competition.  The band is very proud of you all!

The solid nationals performance is a sign of things to come in 2013.  See our events page to find out more!
