2017 Composition Competition Wrap Up

On 8th July 2017 at the Salvation Army Brisbane City Temple the South Brisbane Federal Band along with Guest Conductor Russell Gray and Competition Adjudicator Bill Broughton, presented another showcase of brand new pieces for the Composition Competition Gala Concert.  It was wonderful to see 7 out of the 10 composers at the concert hearing their pieces “live” for the first time.

With 13 entrants and 10 finalists this year has been the most successful event since it began in 2012.  The band performed exceptionally well, entertaining both the composers in the audience and those who had come to enjoy the Gala Concert.

The band was fortunate enough to be able to work with Russell Gray once again, as his influence was a driving force to the inception of the Competition six years ago. The Feds were extremely excited to be able to welcome Russell to join the team once again this year.

Bill Broughton has proven to be an asset yet again to the Competition as he provides unparalleled passion and inspiration for both composers and players alike. Bill undertakes each year the task of ensuring that every composer is encouraged and motivated to improve and continue to grow as a composer in the future. The time spent by Bill in articulating his comments and the time taken during his Composition Workshop is a testament to his ability and passion to inspire participants in the South Brisbane Federal Band Composition Competition.

The success of initiatives like the Composition Competition is predicated on the support of musicians like Russell and Bill. We’re proud to have their support and appreciate their dedication to the promotion of the Competition and it’s continued success in the future.
