Musical Director Vacancy
3rd October 2016
The South Brisbane Federal Band is seeking expressions of interest for the role of Musical Director.
‘The Feds’, one of Brisbane's iconic brass bands, are taking a century old band into the modern era with vigor, enthusiasm and community spirit. Formed in 1912 in the tradition of the great English brass bands, they have been entertaining the public for over 100 years, performing monthly in Brisbane City Council parks as part of the Bands in Parks program.
The band is an integral part of the musical fabric of Brisbane and in recent times has been thrilling audiences with a blend of traditional and contemporary brass. The band is made up of a wide mix of players of all ages and professions brought together by a love of making music. Within the band you will find teachers, lawyers, engineers, students, tradesmen and professional musicians all dedicated to their craft.
In recent years, the Band has proven themselves to be strong competitors within A Grade, with consistent performances at State and National Competitions. The Feds very recently became the A Grade Queensland State Champions with a clean sweep for all on-stage performances.
The South Brisbane Federal Band committee is seeking a suitably experienced and dedicated individual who can continue the musical development and growth of the band.
The opportunity to direct the band at this time is one that poses a significant opportunity for persons who are passionate about brass banding at the highest level and who share our vision of enriching the community with brass music.
The South Brisbane Federal Band is excited to annouce the 2016/2017 Composition Competition. This is our 5th year and we are determined to encourage more composers from around Australia and from around the world to get involved in this wonderful event.
This year we are provide a longer build up with the opportunity to have a review/feedback date to help provide more encouragement and feedback to composers involved. The entrants are encouraged to create an original entertaining work, march or sacred item/hymn or test piece (B-C Grade) for brass band. The compositions will be judged by Mr Bill Broughton and shortlisted entries will be performed at the Gala Concert in June/July 2016/2017 where the winners will be announced.
There are substantial prizes on offer by the band with first prize being $500.
Feds take out A Grade at Queensland Band Championships 2016!
At the Yamaha Queensland Band Championships held this weekend, the Feds became the A Grade Queensland Band Champions. With consistent performances on both days, the Feds managed to take out all on-stage events. All results from this competition can be found on the QBA Website, here.
The result from the contest was a significant achievement for the band, and one that the band has been working towards for some time. The win was cause for celebration in more ways than one, as it was the perfect way to send off their Musical Director Louisa Lawless, who has resigned after four years with the band.
Lou has been an integral part of the band's continued growth and development, and has taken the Feds forward musically with style and passion. The quality of the performances and the results on the weekend was a testament to her dedication and skill as an MD. The band would like to take this opportunity to thank Louisa for her commitment and everything she has done in support of the Feds.
The Feds are now looking forward towards further musical development and growth, and are currently advertising the position of Musical Director. For information and all expressions of interest, please contact the Band President Shane Midgley via email () or via phone (0423 617 076) at any time.
